No More Heart Burn
Due to our busy lifestyle, increased pressures to be places and generally in a rush, these all are potentially to blame for the various causes of heartburn plus attribute to the various degrees of severity of heartburn we might suffer from.No matter the actual cause, it can be simplified all down to stomach acid travelling from its' natural home in the stomach and then getting into the esophagus.
Heartburn May Signal Other Problems
The problem is finding a way to stop it, answering questions like, is it dangerous?, what treatment to take?, how strong a treatment is needed? All of these problems above will help to the understanding of and will determine the treatment to be taken. The actual treatment will be determined by the severity of the heartburn. Obviously one bout of heartburn after over indulging in a larger than usual meal would suggest your body is telling you something, not to eat so much food at one sitting.
The human body is a marvelous piece of machinery, actually it is a carbon-oxygen machine with us doing the driving. Along with any machine comes regular maintenance. As stated earlier, while many people suffer from some form of heartburn, be it even only occasionally, very painful and persistent bouts may be signs of other, more serious problems, such as a hiatal hernia or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). While niether one is usually fatal, they will require the attention of a physician. The sooner it is looked at by a professional the sooner the actual cause can be traced and cured or prevented.
How Does Heartburn Come About?
Once we have eaten or drank a liquid the stomach then goes into action by using hydrochloric acid to break down the food and fluids as part of the body’s digestive system. Within the stomach our food is enclosed by the stomach lining which serves as a protective shield against this strong acid that is produced to break down our foods; however the esophagus leading to the stomach and where the food and fluids pass is not designed to deal with it. The heartburn arrives if even a small amount of this acid seeps past the stomach valve, which is like a one way valve, thus heartburn can occur.
The Sphincter Muscle
As stated earlier the path to the stomach is interupted by a one-way door connecting the esophagus to the top of the stomach. This is our one way valve which allows anything that is swallowed to enter the stomach and when operating correctly to keep anything in the stomach from travelling ( refluxing ) back the way it came into the esophagus. This valve is known as the sphincter muscle. Unfortunatly it sometimes loses its ability to stop the stomach acid from refluxing upwards, causing heartburn. The sphinchter does not work alone and a hiatal hernia can eventuate when the muscles working the sphincter have herniated, or in a sense stopped performing their function correctly or broken, which allows the hydrochloric acid and pepsin to rise back into the esophagus. One common treatment, a dietary and lifestyle change, is usually prescribed by your physician. What this does is the diet would be less stressfull on your stomach and the less strain on yourself in your new lifestyle will continue until the muscles have a chance to heal and function correctly again thus eleveating your heartburn caused by these symptoms .
